Hidden Forces? – „Painting“ in the 1960s and 1970s
International Conference and Curatorial Panel
at MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt/Main, Germany, June 14-15, 2013
Usually the 1960s and 1970s are regarded as a time when artists turned away from painting in order to test other media such as performance, happening, installation, video, or film. These new forms of art seemed to distinguish themselves not only from traditional aesthetics, but also from the institutional and ideological concepts that were connected to painting. The two-day conference, which is organized by Bern University, Switzerland and Goethe-University, Frankfurt/Main, questions this radical break with painting. The conference thus ties into the current strong interest toward artistic positions of the 1960s and 1970s, but aims to provide impulses for scholarly re-evaluations and revisions of a well-established chapter of art history.
